HUM
installation
2010
HUM is an investigation into the ubiquitous hydro power box situated in every neighborhood, and the ever-present low-level sounds they introduce into the environment, creating artificial undertones to our experience of the outdoors. The work loosely references minimalist music and also highlights the potential negative effects of these particular sounds: the characteristic 'hum' produced by the oscillation of alternating currents in power transformers has been linked with sleep disorders, disorientation and agitation in a percentage of the population, yet is a tone that permeates almost every aspect of our daily lives, whether we are consciously aware of it or not.

WHITEOUT
2-channel or 4-channel performance + projection
2010
WHITEOUT is an examination of the electronically produced sounds continuously occupying our airspace, but only discernible through specialized amplification. The collective artifacts of mass communication, EMF, satellite, and wireless technologies are constantly moving through our bodies, potentially influencing our biology and brain activity in ways yet to be fully appreciated. What if we were suddenly made conscious of these various sounds, and what impact are they already having on our subconscious, our bodies, or our environment?
My thanks to Danjel van Tijn for his help developing the projection component.

BUNKER
audio cd + performance
2010 - in development
This BUNKER project approaches four WWI army bunkers, creating high resolution recordings of the interiors as an artificial tone is slowly introduced into the space, defining their geometry and material through acoustic phenomenon.
